Sony has confirmed that India will see a 2013 PlayStation 4 launch. In an interview with IVG, PlayStation India country manager Atindriya Bose revealed that is aiming to launch the PS4 in India along with Europe, but logistical issues may cause a delay of up to a month.
“It will be matched with the European launch; give or take a bit to account for Indian logistics. The consoles have to be shipped in advance and currently all consoles also require certification for the India market. In terms of targeting, we’re looking to synchronise with the European launch.”
To clarify, Bose added, “That’s this year.”
When asked about whether or not the PS4 will face the same problems coming to India as the PS3 did, Bose responded, “It’s unfair to compare the PS4 with PS3 because we have come a long way. With PS3, first the world launches took place and then we started looking at the other markets we wanted to go into. For PS4, it will have a timeline that is more aligned with what we had on PS Vita. Being a portable, the logistics had made it easier for us to launch day-and-date [with Europe]. Once we know the European date for PS4, we will work towards that, but there will be some gap, depending on the logistics.”
Bose assured that the Indian PS4 release would only face a delay of a month at the most, “unless there is an issue at the certification level.”
There have been some unconfirmed signs pointing to a November 13 launch in Europe, which potentially means that India could see the PS4 hit store shelves as soon as mid-December. It’ll give Sony’s console a jump-start on sales over the Xbox One, which won’t arrive officially until late 2014.
